An organization that keeps records on such things tells us that, nationwide, hospitals and emergency rooms see about 60,000 injuries annually that are the result of woodworking machine accidents. For years, our members haven’t added to those statistics, but that shouldn’t make us too smug. Are we a very safe group or just lucky? We are just lucky if we don’t know the best and safest way to operate the machines and take advantage of the safety information on our website and elsewhere. We are just lucky if we don’t take advantage of the knowledge and experience of other club members. We are just lucky if we don’t pay attention or don’t have the capacity to perform a task properly. Human flesh and bone are no match for carbide teeth traveling at over 100 mph being driven by a 3 horsepower motor. Woodworking Club members, don’t trust yourself to be just lucky.
